(People should get life insurance coverage for a variety of reasons.)
Even if you are single, you should have coverage to protect your friends and family from having to support your financial costs of burial and any outstanding debts.
However, the majority of people decide to get life insurance coverage when they have it offered from a professional job or when they are sick. It is great to have coverage from your job because the chances are that they will carry an extensive plan, but what if something happens before then? The whole point of life insurance is to protect against uncertainty.
It is not a pleasant topic to think about, but you never know when you could die. Do you want to financial burden someone close to you when all they want to do is grieve? And if you apply for insurance when you are already sick, it will be very expensive.
Jason Cunningham's article, "Why You Should Review Your Life Insurance Policy," written August 20, 2006 and posted on financial-shopper-network.com explains that you should constantly update or at least evaluate your life insurance policy once every few years.
"At some point in point, all of us will experience life changes. These changes may include moving to a new city, marriage, childbirth, a new job, a considerable increase in salary, or even retirement. While life events cause sudden change, it is necessary to review your life insurance plan."
People usually become seriously concerned with life insurance coverage before the birth of their child, sending their children to college or buying a home. If an unexpected death occurs during this time, it will be devastating but it will ensure that the child does not have to drop out of college and that monthly housing payments can be confidently made.
"While these are important events, an individual probably should review their life insurance every two to three years, regardless of whether any of the discussed changes occurs."
A significant change in income from a job promotion can often leave you underinsured. Even though your policy initially provided enough financial coverage, you will probably buy a bigger house or more expensive car with your extra finances, meaning you will need more coverage to support these things in event of your premature death.
"If we die, most of us do want our family to maintain the same lifestyle."
But the primary time to update or change your life insurance is when you get married. "Changes in your life insurance program are common when couples get married, because individuals often do not wish to leave their future spouses with their debt obligations."
Everyone (except for children) should have life insurance protected their loved ones financially. But insured people often forget about stipulations and coverage terms associated with their policy after it is signed.
"Please evaluate your life insurance. You might be under-insured or over-insured and not even realize it. It is definitely a good idea to review your life insurance policy, if you are getting married, buying a new home, retiring, or having a child.
